I would like to add one more thought to the subject matter of Vehicle Registration and law enforcement. If you have contact with a law enforcement officer and after examining your Vehicle Registration, he has serious doubts that your vehicle is the one described on the Vehicle Registration, he has the authority to impound your vehicle pending further investigation (22651 CVC).
For that reason, you want to make certain that the VIN (vehicle identification number) on your vehicle matches the registration. If you're dealing with a law enforcement officer who has knowledge of old VWs, your VIN should appear authentic and in the proper location.

I once saw a VIN in a VW that had obviously been cut from another VW in an oval shape and epoxied over the original VIN. While the story is humorous, having your vehicle impounded could ruin your day.

Frankly, most of us, me included, could be issued a citation for one equipment violation or another by a knowledgeable officer who is so inclined. I think our apparent maturity and exemplary behavior makes us less of a target.
