The following is just my opinion on the general concept of the red and green sticker vs a street legal vehicle.

Don't take anything that is street legal and make it either a red or green sticker vehicle.

You give up your license plates and thus your ability to drive it on the street (street legal).

Nothing, nada, zip, zilch... not a street legal 4 wheeled vehicle or a street legal motorcycle.

If it's street legal, leave it that way. If you can't afford to pay the DMV fees and the insurance, do a NON-OP on it, just keep it registered as street legal.

So... Just step back and get away from the DMV office and put down those DMV forms and nobody will get hurt.

The DMV has a real hard time switching it back to street legal status. It can be done, but most of them don't know how and I've asked for what the proceedure is and they can't say (I believe that they don't have a written proceedure for it).

You (I said you!) have to figure out what is required to make a vehicle street legal (most DMV staff don't have a clue) and then you get all that stuff together... Safety inspection at the CHP, light inspection at a light inspection station, possible smog issues (because some DMV staff try to treat it as a Specially Constructed Vehicle, ouch), VIN verification (the laws are changing, and getting more restrictive) and sometimes some other stuff (you're at the mercy of the DMV office/staff and the auto club doesn't do this process, so no help there).

So.... Just step back and get away from the DMV office and put down those DMV forms and nobody will get hurt.

And, if you ever want to sell it, IMHO, it will have a higher selling price if it is street legal.

Do you want to know how I really feel about this issue?
Just push my start button. Arrrgh!

This message was brought to you and paid for, by a California State Licensed Vehicle Verifier (at least until Feb 26, when I won't renew my license).

Paved roads, just more needless government spending...
